Strandja remains Nature Park
It happened thanks to the acceptance of the changes in the Protected Areas Law. Now the Orders, Decrees, Administrative Acts for announcement of reserves, natural and national parks, protected areas and historic sites, which are published till June 30th 2007 – not to be appealed.
147 deputies voted “yes”, 2 – “against” and 15 – “abstention”.
It was written in the law that all court cases against PAs acts at the moment must be stopped immediately.
That means terminate of the “Strandja” case also.

FCS Project

The project will develop national guidelines for identifying the favourable conservations status of Natura 2000 species and habitats on national, regional and site level and for assessing this status on a national level. To the extent possible the conservation status will be assessed at site level for a limited number of sites. Two working groups are established to set up a methodology, one focussed on N-2000 habitats and plant species and one focussed on animal species. These work groups include experts from government and scientific institutions and from NGOs working on the implementation of N-2000.

Swiss trainee in BBF
For six months the Swiss trainee – Rolando Barreiro from Geneva will support BBF team. He arrives on March 25th and already is well integrated in the life of the Foundation, as well as in the rhythm and atmosphere of Sofia. Rolando join us thanks to the Syni organization.

Round table for Belasitza Nature Park

Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation is organizing a Round Table “For Nature Park Belasitsa” on 12 April 2007 at 11.00 in the Conference Hall of the Petrich Municipality. The aim is further clarification of the idea for the establishment of the Belasitsa Nature Park, as well as continuation of the debate on this topic.

Working meeting for the floods
BBF is organizing a meeting for rivers ecosystem protection and sustainable measures for floods prevention. It will be organized on February 15th from 10 to 14 p.m. at St. Sofia Hotel.
The participants of the meeting will be representatives of state institutions, scientific institute and NGOs.
The good European practices will be presented, as well as a discussion on implementation of the natural measures.

Honorary Diploma for BBF
BBF received Honorary Diploma for the exceptional contribution to strengthening the partnership for sustainable integrated regional development of Bulgaria as a part of Europe of regions. The Minister of Regional development bestows the Diploma on the executive director of BBF.

Cross Border cooperation in the frame of Green Belt
A workshop “Planning Cross Border Cooperation between Bulgaria and Macedonia in the Frame of the Green Belt Initiative” was organised by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation /BBF/ on 17-18.11.2006 in Bor Hunting Lodge, Kjustendil, Bulgaria. The aims of the workshop were to exchange experience on conservation projects for Green Belt areas in Bulgaria and Macedonia and to plan the next steps of cooperation. Twenty participants from NGOs, scientific and state institutions from both countries presented their activities for protection of the Jablanitsa and Pelister Mountains in Mecedonia, and Belasitsa, Pirin and Rhodope mountains in Bulgaria.

Competition for financing of students masters thesis

BBF will announce for the third time the competition for financing of the students’ masters’ thesis in the field of biodiversity conversation and protected areas management. All students from Bulgarian Universities could apply with project proposals, if they are in the scope of the competition:

  • protection of the world threatened species;
  • management of protected areas; 
  • mechanisms for sustainable use of nature resources; 
  • eco-tourism development, bio-agriculture, etc.
  • nature-conservation education

BLACK SEA DAY WILL BE CELEBRATE IN KALIAKRA VISITORS CENTER

For the first time the new exhibition of Kaliakra Visitors center in Bulgarevo will be presented to the general public.

BBF team will use the International Black Sea Day to acquaint the local people with the richness and the problems of the Black Sea.

On October 31th 2 groups of pupils and 1 group of students will visited the Center and will study for the fishes, dolphins and seals. For sure the interactive installations and interesting presented information will involve the kids and make them real friends of the sea. In the afternoon will be the celebration for the “older” people, who will have a chance to watch the new actual film – “The cry of the Sea”. The authors of the film are Tzvetelina Atanasova and Valentin Gonevski from BNT.

BBF team participated in the Pan-European IUCN meeting

More than 200 delegates from 37 national Governments, the European Commission, five UN organizations, 88 NGOs and private companies debated ways to activate the full potential and capacity of the Union. Among them were 4 representatives of BBF. Participants set the stage for a process to develop a vision for European nature beyond 2010. The participants called for seeing nature and its services as the foundation for economic and social welfare. The meeting was also important for the further development of the Union’s activities in Europe.

BBF continues with the conservation lectures

From November 8th 2006, BBF continues with the traditional lectures in the Biology Faculty of the University of Sofia. As usual the lectures will start every Wednesday at 18.30.

This year we will go further and from the theory will “jump” in the practice. Every two weeks BBF will organize study trip to different conservation regions or projects in Bulgaria and abroad.
